The Dash

This Sunday was the third Sunday we attended a new church in Spirit Lake. We prefer a contemporary service, so we hadn't given the Presbyterian church a try yet but I decided to go with my friend Ashlee a few Sundays ago. Nick and I have been trying to find, and praying for, the right church since we moved here. I can't say for certain if we've found it just yet, but we have enjoyed and got so much out of this church in the 3 weeks we've been going that we keep wanting to go back.

I was so impressed from the minute we walked through the door at how welcome EVERY person in that church made us feel. We were approached after church by so many people asking our names and where we were from and told they were glad we came to worship today. We had not found this in any other church we have tried in the area. It was a great feeling, and I look forward to every Sunday!

Anyway, to the point.. The pastor at this church gives phenomenal sermons. I sometimes struggle (thank you, A.D.D combined with extreme fidgeting) to focus on what they are teaching and get lost in my own daydreams, but this man has my full attention from beginning to end. He makes sense, he doesn't skip around and lose me, and his messages are meaningful. This week was all about "the dash."

He started with a verse from Ecclesiastes which got my attention right away because it's well-known, one of my favorites, and I read it at Lauren's funeral:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the Heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

He went on to talk about "the dash." When you see a gravestone, you see a birth date and a death date, but what really matters -- the most meaningful part -- is the dash. It's the life in between those dates and how a person spent that time that really matters in the end. A woman wrote a poem about this and I hadn't read it before he mentioned it at church -- I'm sure many of you have heard of it, but I really love it.

The Dash Poem
by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

After Lauren passed away, I definitely began living my dash a little differently. The sunsets are a little more pink, the "I love yous" a little more frequent, the hugs a little longer, and relationships a little higher on the totem pole. Material things mean a little less. Worrying seems like a waste of time. Being who I am, speaking my mind and not caring what others think has become my thing. But I still need a little reminder from time to time...

And although this sermon touched me personally, it really is a message for us all. We spend our days worrying about how much money we have, what we look like, what others think of us. We always want more, but we never stop and smell the roses. We're so focused on our own lives, our busy schedules, our problems, our joys, ourselves that we fail to see the beauty in others and the struggles they are going through. We know that today could be our last day, but we still live as if there's a million tomorrows...

So, in the words of Clint Black, "I'm gonna spend my time like it's going out of style!"

How are you spending your dash?!

Cute Daddy Moments & Other Poppy Tidbits

I feel like I don't know if I'm more excited to be a mom or more excited to watch Benny be a dad.. he's so darn cute!!

A couple weeks ago, he said he read to Poppy after I fell asleep (adorable!) and the other night he read our book to Poppy again. He reads Poppy "Oh Baby, the Places You Will Go" and while he was reading to my tummy, Poppy was kicking away. I think Poppy loves daddy's voice! Now he walks around saying, "Oh, baby, the places you will go. The world's you will visit, the friends you will know."

Every night we pray for Poppy and then we sing "You are My sunshine" although daddy is still struggling to get the words right - but Poppy doesn't care. And of course following that, Benny always breaks into the Iowa State fight song (have to start them young..) ;) We've started wondering a lot about things like -- what will we sing Poppy at night, who will read books to Poppy, what will our holiday traditions be and all that fun stuff. Benny already took dibs on holding Poppy during church and I assigned him the roles of fingernail trimmer and booger remover. Lucky, lucky man...

He probably talks to my doctor more than I does - tells him how his joints hurt, too, and he's exhausted. I told the doctor I thought he should take the GD screening with me so he can really feel involved .. ;)

In other Poppy news, we're planning to "head to the city" this weekend to scope out a million consignment shops in search of some affordable spring/summer maternity clothes! I'm dying to wear capris... I didn't even drag out my tub of summer clothes knowing not a single thing would fit. We're also going to register for some baby stuff. I'm starting to realize baby will be here before we know it and the next couple months are busy, busy, busy so we better get going. My friend, Jenessa, is coming over Friday to help me pick out a color to paint the nursery and as soon as she has that done I get get some of the other stuff done.

I've been very emotional lately - it might be because I never sleep between the hours of 3 to 5am (Poppy likes to play..) and work is beyond stressful this week, but I think it's just more realizing that we'll be bringing a beautiful little person into this world soon. Whenever I see my tummy move from a little kick, a tear falls .. that's a lot of tears in one day! Benny can't make it to our next appointment and I'm really sad about that, but I know it's okay for him to miss one .. I just really love sharing that with him. We always look at each other and smile when we hear little Poppy's heart so I suppose I'll have to smile at an empty chair. We bought grandpa John and grandma Donna books to fill out for Poppy (and any future children) to read. Grandpa John has been working away on his this week since he can't work (Praying for good news at the doctor today so he doesn't go crazy sitting at home) and he read us what he had done last night. I laughed, cried, and just felt so blessed to have such a wonderful dad and example in my life. Poppy will cherish that book forever!! He even "wrote it like he was reading it with Poppy - in child language" he told us!

Poppy's heart was beating at 150 yesterday and so far mama and baby are healthy! The doctor said, "I see you're still pregnant. That was kind of our goal for you from the beginning. Now if you can just stay that way until at least 36 weeks, that would be wonderful." I'll do my best, doc.

A Day Of Presents

You only turn 24 once, so I thought I'd send Robyn something fun for her 24th Birthday since I can't be there to celebrate with her!

I purchased some small, fun, and silly gifts...

And of course there had to be two cards - one from Benny and me and one from Poppy!

And a little note explaining what she was supposed to do...
I wrapped them up in some Christmas wrapping paper scraps I had leftover in a basket because a) I knew Robyn would not care and b) I knew Robyn would think this was funny...

Put little tags on each one with what hour she was supposed to open it!

In the box and ready to ship.. it even got there a couple days early so she had to wait to open all of them!!

HAPPY 24TH BIRTHDAY, ROBYN!!

Twins!

Just Kidding - but I bet I got your attention. There's only one Poppy inside of me! In my opinion, Poppy looks just like me. ;) And I may be biased, but Poppy is the most adorable baby I've ever seen...

Today was our ultrasound. I am pretty sure I will remember this day forever. I was nervous and excited going in at the same time. I really had no idea what to expect because I've never had an ultrasound. I do remember going with my aunt Joyce when she had one several years ago, but I'm pretty sure I didn't even know where babies came from back then. ;)

When the lady said the jelly was a little warm, I was really glad because if it was cold I was going to pee my pants! I actually drank 92 ounces of water today which I usually don't do because I can't be going to the bathroom all day long.

While I was sitting in my car waiting for Benny to get there, Poppy was kicking me like crazy! He/She must have been gearing up for the big performance. The sonographer said, "Baby is moving like crazy!" I think Poppy might have been showing off for mom and dad..

She started the ultrasound and I'm sure she was going to ask if we wanted to know the gender, but I got nervous and blurted out that we did not want to know. It was rather tempting and at one point I thought about asking, but I would have been upset if we actually found out. At first I really didn't know what was going on, but she was wonderful at pointing everything out. I think she really loves her job because she kept saying, "Aww.. look - baby's yawning! How cute!" It was no time at all before I felt the tears form and start falling. I think daddy got a little teary-eyed, too. We saw Poppy's little fingers, little feet, little tummy (everything was little). Poppy weighed in at 13 oz and the heartbeat was 151. He/She kept throwing her hands up in front of her face (probably to say, "Leave me alone. I'm tired!") We came home with some adorable pictures (including 2 big yawns) that I can't wait to show off to Gpa John when he gets back from the Bahamas.

Our due date was pretty spot on - the ultrasound said July 22nd and we had predicted the 24th. I can't wait for our next appointment in 2 weeks!

P.S. I will attempt to post pictures, but I'm going to wait until Grandpa John returns and gets to see them first!! So check back later. :)

Halfway To Baby!

..Drum Roll Please...

This mama hit the 20 week mark today! I cannot believe how fast the first half of my pregnancy flew by. When we found out when I was just 4 weeks along, I thought it would take FOREVER .. but sure enough, baby is now the size of a small cantaloupe (which are on sale this week in your local HyVee produce department) or the length of a banana. Now is the time baby can start to taste more. Benny says we have to eat Mexican every night. He's so annoyed that I hate spicy food and doesn't want our child to have the same tastes as I do.

Not only does this mean we're halfway to meeting Poppy, it means it's time to SEE Poppy. Our ultrasound is Thursday and we couldn't be more excited. I purchased a few more things for the nursery and will be planning a craft day soon!

Cravings: Apples, Gummies, Milk, Starburst, Anything grilled (2 steaks, please!), Eggs

Blessings: Poppy is moving and kicking more and more! It's so hard to keep my hands off my tummy all day long..

Discomforts: My joints - Hips, Knees, Wrists .. wow do I feel like an old lady! Heartburn, Tummyaches.

What's Playing On Our Radio: Now that Poppy can hear us out here, we've been singing "You are My sunshine" & the "Iowa State Fight Song" almost every day. Daddy sings really loud! I listen to a Christian station on my way to work and home every day and I plan to have that on the radio in the nursery for those nights I'm up late and need something relaxing on!

Book Nook: Currently reading "Chicken Soup for the Expectant Mother" .. it's cute. Reassuring. Comforting. It is chicken soup after all...

As we head into the 2nd half of pregnancy, I've been reflecting on the 1st half and looking toward bringing baby home:

Most Excited For: Ultrasound, Preparing the Nursery, Baby Showers, Making the Final Final Final-Until-I-Change-My-Mind-During-Delivery name selections, And of course - bringing Poppy home!

Most Nervous For: Glucose Test (Yuck!), Delivery (Yes, I got sick when we watched those videos in high school), Finding Daycare!

And, of course, you need some belly pics...

Me at 20 weeks:

My "I Love My Iowa State Baby .. The Future is Bright" Shirt:

And... this is how daddy is feeling at 20 weeks (and after I woke him up at 5 AM to tell him we won a free family session from Extreme Images by Ashley):

God, Family, and Roast Beef

Benny and I have been talking about what we want for our family for a long time - what values and traditions we want to carry on from our own childhoods and what things we would like to be different for our children. Obviously, these conversations are occurring more often now that there's actually a little on on the way.

Thinking of my childhood usually brings smiles - I was blessed with two wonderful parents and two awesome brothers (I didn't ALWAYS think they were awesome... that came later in life) who made life a lot of fun. Now that one of those people has chosen to no longer be a part of my life (or at least a healthy/positive part), sometimes these memories bring a few tears as well. Despite what emotions they bring, they are a part of who I am and a part of the mother/wife I will be. I could go on for days about everything I remember from my childhood, but instead I'll share something so relevant to today .. Sundays.

I remember Sundays growing up in two different ways - Football Sundays and Spring Sundays.

Fall Sundays meant waking up to dad on the couch with a cup of coffee in his favorite Bears shirt watching ESPN pregame shows. Mom would either be sitting on the couch with her bible, out in the garden, or putting the roast in the oven. I don't remember many Sundays we didn't have roast, carrots, and potatoes. We'd all hover around the TV for the BIG game - the Chicago Bears and whoever they were playing. When I was younger, I'd play with my mom's hair coming up with all sorts of new styles for her and sometimes even beg her to leave it that way. I always sat in the same oversized chair with her because we were both little enough to squeeze in. Sometimes we'd get bored of the game and go to Hy-Vee grocery shopping. To this day, I still miss grocery shopping with my mom - it was one of my favorite things to do. I think too often we only remember the BIG things, but it's really those little memories that mean the most. Sometime in the afternoon, my dad and his friends would have a big football game in our yard. It was the PERFECT yard for playing football. All the kids would run around the house doing whatever kids do or chase each other around the yard. I sure do miss that farm!

Sundays in the Spring were a little bit different... My parents weren't big church goers when I was growing up. As I went off to college, they became very involved with their church and bible study, but I usually had to convince them to go when I was younger. What I do remember about church Sundays was dad putting on a button up shirt (the only one he owned that wasn't HyVee white) and combing back his hair after he got back from doing a few things at work. Mom would get all dressed up, do her makeup and curl her hair. We'd head to church and then afterward we'd all pile in the van and head to Creston. The whole way we would listen to Casey Kasem's Top 40 on the radio - Jake would bring his headphones so he didn't have to listen, but he'd turn them up so loud that I'd complain to mom that I could only hear his music. Of course, I always won because I was the baby. We'd enjoy a meal at Happy Chef (which I don't think is even there anymore) - I'd always have chocolate milk. We'd conclude the day walking around Walmart picking up a few miscellaneous items. If we didn't go to church, we'd often all pile in the van and head to Des Moines or Omaha and spend the day shopping.

Most importantly, I remember Sundays being about family. We weren't worried about getting things done - those could wait until Monday. This Sunday was much like those I remember from my childhood. We got up and cooked a hearty breakfast of eggs and hashbrowns. Benny put on his button up shirt and combed his hair while I got all dressed up and curled mine. Off to church we went (where Poppy kicked/punched me through the entire service) and then it was to Walmart for him to get a haircut and me to pick up a few random things. We came home to the aroma of roast in the crockpot - my mouth was watering already. I made a pan of brownies, ate half the pan of brownies, and beat Benny in a few games of Ping Pong. We'll probably spend the rest of the day cuddling on the couch while the snow falls outside.

I feel truly blessed to be married to someone who will not only stand over the pan of brownies and eat them with me, cut the fat off my roast, drive me safely to church in the blizzard, and hold my hand while we're praying - but someone who shares the same values in life and truly appreciates all the little things. We are so blessed and I give all the credit to the man upstairs.

P.S. I encourage you to check out the song our praise band sang at church this morning - I'm in love with it! It's called "How You Live." Happy Sunday to you all!

Creepy, Crawlies ..

I have always been passionate about helping others, and when I chose the human services field - I knew I would love it. I knew that along with it would come some very stressful situations and some very unpleasant conditions.

Disclaimer: My house is not spotless - far from. We don't vaccuum, dust, and clean the counters every day. We pick up clutter when people come over, and sometimes we do have dirty dishes.

Every week, I enter multiple homes with conditions from spotless (cleaner than my house will EVER be) to not knowing what I'm sitting in. I see cockroaches, lice, and mysterious sticky substances. I am exposed to secondhand smoke, scabies, mold, and every virus/bacteria you could ever search for on WebMD. While I don't overly enjoy all these things, they don't particularly bother me. (Although, the smoke bothers me much more now that I'm pregnant .. I don't even go into relative's homes who smoke since I've found out I'm pregnant, but when it's your job - you have no choice). I just trust that God will protect me (and Poppy) from all these things that go along with helping others. I know I'm making a difference, and to me that's worth all the risks.

Anyway, today I had a situation that truly gave me the creepy, crawlies .. and it will give you them, too, so if you want to sleep without itching tonight - please don't read on. However, I also found a lot of humor in it because that's just what I do and probably the reason I'm able to keep my sanity at my job.

I was on a visit today and halfway through I was informed that the apartment is infested with bed bugs. I am not kidding you - bed bugs are seriously one of my worst fears. I fear hotels for this reason and the thought of them makes me ill. But, being the professional I am, I had to remain completely calm and take it with a grain of salt rather than becoming hysterical and jumping around the room scratching all over in true Grace fashion. I finished the visit, went outside, and that's when panic set in. I had been sitting on a metal folding chair - good. However, my coat had been on the  couch - bad. I got out of view of the apartment and took my coat off (it was not the least bit warm today, either) and opened my trunk. I had a grocery sack in there so I tied it up securely and got into my car. Then I panicked again - my seats are cloth so if there were any on me, they were giong to jump to my seat. Ahh! There was no escape. Anyway, I took a deep breath and drove back to the office where I panicked to one of my co-workers who reassured me that there was little chance I had picked any up but to make sure I dried my clothes when I got home just to be safe. I then spent a good 20 minutes researching bed bugs - never do that - you'll just itch more!

I made it through the work day - scratching like crazy - and pulled in our garage at home. I would guess it's about 30 degrees in our garage. I stripped down naked and set all my clothes on the steps. I am OCD about laundry - seriously - OCD (like reds don't go with pinks) so I left my shoes, pink bra and pink undies on the step and threw the rest of my clothes in the washer. I then ran to the shower and took a forever long shower to try and get all the itchies out of me. (It didn't work).

Let's just say - my husband was a bit puzzled when he pulled in the garage to find my tennis shoes, bra, and undies on the step. ;) I'm currently washing/drying my clothes for a 2nd time .. just to be safe. I wanted to just throw them away, but my husband would have been extremely upset at my irrationality so I stuck with this system instead.

I know you are all probably thinking this was an extreme overreaction and that the likelihood of me bringing them home was small, but you just never know and I tend to err on the side of overreacting. I will most likely start visiting this house once a week and I will just have to get used to it and deal with it because this is the job and field I chose, but I have a feeling there will be a lot of changing in the garage moments after work until I can deal with it.

When I texted my coworker about it, she pointed out that, "What husband doesn't want to come home to a naked wife?" Good point .. Benny might not mind my overreacting after all. ;)
