Our house is looking more and more like Babies 'R Us every day .. Benny and I were talking about what baby items we like the most so far and I thought, "Well, that deserves a blog post!" Here are some things that are used/loved/needed in our home with little man around this month..
Mom's Top Items:
1. Boppy Pillow: I.Love.These. They are good for a million and one things including nursing (if you have a c-section, roll up a towel underneath it .. works great .. tip from a friend), picture taking, naps (supervised only, of course!), tummy time, and much more. I even put him on his tummy on the boppy to comb his hair after his bath because it is so long in the back this is the only way I can get to it!
2. Hooded Towels: Mostly, they're just adorable. I wouldn't say a necessity, but we sure think they are convenient.
3. Baby's First Year Calendar: I have ZERO time right now to be working on a baby book. That's something I can do on boring days in my office when I go back to work .. right now, I'm spending time with the little man. I keep our calendar out and write anything and everything down in it that I think I might possibly want to remember about little man so I can transfer it to his baby book later. Plus, ours came with handy little stickers so sometimes I don't even have to write anything.
4. Sleep Gowns: These are SO convenient for diaper changes and hanging around the house. Once he outgrew the swaddle pods, he slept in these for a while and now he's just in sleepers.
5. Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Lotion: No, I do not believe this helps my baby sleep better, but I DO love the smell. (Benny says it makes him smell like a girl). We give Trice a bath and then I do a little infant massage every night using this lotion. It relaxes me, so I'm sure it relaxes him. Plus, it makes his skin oh-so-soft.
6. Swing: Best.Invention.Ever. Okay, so I really don't use our swing THAT much, but when I do it's great. Benny wanted one of the new fancy cradle swings, but I came across a brand new looking swing at a garage sale this summer and couldn't resist the price. We had decided we'd try it and if he liked it, we'd save the money. He loves staring at the mobile and it makes all sorts of different sounds and has lots of speeds. It gives me 10 minutes to do everything I need to do for the day!
7. Pack 'N Play: What don't we use this for?! The pack 'n play we have came with a changing table attachment, a cradle rocker thing (I'm certain that's the official name) a bassinet part and then, well, the pack 'n play. It's currently next to our bed and Trice sleeps in the bassinet part until we move him to his crib (if we ever do that .. totally kidding). We use the cradle rocker in the living room or kitchen while we eat or just wherever .. he's getting too long for it now, though! And the whole unit is just super convenient for travelling and we can use it for years!
8. Rocking Chair: I have spent numerous hours in both his nursery rocking chair and our living room rocker with Trice. When we first came home, it was the only chair I could get in and out of on my own. There's nothing I love more than rocking my little man and singing lullabies!
Dad's Top Items:
1. Crinkle Monkey (Known as Mr. Crinkle Monkey at our house): Benny very much wanted Trice to play with toys from day one.. ha! This was the most impulsive buy ever. We were at Target getting some last minute things one weekend and Benny just pulled it off the shelf and put it in the cart. The first time he put this in front of Trice's face and made it crinkle was priceless. Trice has been in love with crinkle monkey ever since. Daddy uses it for tummy time, car rides, all the time!
2. Boogie Sucker (also known as a nasal aspirator): Seriously his favorite item. I told him before we ever had Trice that I would not use this thing because I was afraid I'd suck the baby's brains out.. This is like a game to Benny. He always says, "I see a boogie. Where's the boogie sucker?" He's a pro.
3. Humidifier: Since we brought Trice home, he has been congested (hmm.. wonder who he got that from). If we don't use the humidifier at night, it's horrible. Plus, it also provides white noise to help Trice sleep.
4. Links: Benny very much wanted Trice to grip something. I explained to him that I take links to my newborns a lot because their hands are so tiny (and a lot of times my parents don't give their fingers to their babies to grip) and can't hold bigger things. He was pretty pumped that Trice could hold onto these. Plus, they can go on the car seat for in the store, church, etc. and they'll be very handy later on.
5. Piano Playmat: We have spent numerous hours on this thing. Trice LOVES it. he mashes the piano with his feet and stares at everything and waves his arms like crazy. He's recently discovered the mirror and he is kind of obsessed with looking at himself and cooing.
6. Saline Drops: These go hand-in-hand with the boogie sucker .. our doctor suggested these drops at our last appointment because Trice did have some congestion. They seem to be helping and our little man is breathing better at night which helps us all sleep better!
7. Stroller Travel System: We LOVE walks. Benny usually hogs pushing the stroller (he likes to go off-roading and make me shriek). Trice just stares up at him until he falls asleep! It's so convenient to just stick the car seat in there.
8. Swaddle Pods: Unfortunately we weren't able to use these for long as they only go up to 10 pounds, but they sure were a lifesaver until then. I wasn't comfortable swaddling him in a blanket and the Halo sleep swaddles were way too big and too warm for now (but will be awesome later) so I was glad we had one random swaddle pod around. He looked like he was in a straight jacket, but it was the only thing he couldn't bust his arms out of (which led to him screaming) so I sure wish the two I ordered would have arrived before he was over this stage.
Other Handy Items:
-Medela Quick Clean Wipes: There are so many times I barely have enough time to pump let alone clean the pieces. These are a great item to use until you can thoroughly wash the parts.
-Side Snap Shirts: Trice wore these the whole time in the hospital and they are so convenient for diaper changes! Have you noticed I'm ALL about convenience?
-Lullaby App on your Phone: Get one.
**So, when we were thinking about things like diapers, every single person told me they liked a different brand and what one person loved another told me they hated. I decided we would have to just find out for ourselves (like with most baby items) and it worked out great that Benny got pretty much every brand you could imagine from the diaper keg. We've tried several so far and my current favorite is Huggies! I thought Pampers were going to win me over (and the convenient strip does!), but the Huggies have proved the most leak proof thus far. I'll update you next month on whether that's still the case or if I've jumped ship to another brand! But this just goes to show that you should completely ignore blog posts like this one because what we like will not be what you like or maybe even what your baby likes. So if you choose to buy an item simply because I said I liked it, then please don't egg my house when you think it sucks.**
